Part Time - Starts at $12.50/hour

If you are interested in working in a fast-paced, unique environment, Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is looking for you!

We are accepting applications to fill part-time positions in both the cafè and other concessions on zoo grounds. Must have availability Monday-Friday and weekend availability is a must. Available hours will be 10-20 per week.

We are seeking candidates who are energetic, customer- and team-oriented. Candidates with food and beverage, customer service or parks experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Essential Job Functions:

Expected to be at workstation at start of shift and adhere to dress code.

  • Responsibilities may include sales, prep work, cleaning, sanitation, restocking or other jobs as assigned.
  • Staff may be required to work in café or other venue sites on zoo grounds.
  • Determines assigned job position using the daily assignment sheet.
  • Stocks assigned area/s to prepare for customers.
  • Maintains sanitary conditions at work site and proper level of product.
  • Cleans and restocks all areas for the following day.
  • Work site must be checked and approved by management prior to end of shift.
  • Adheres to zoo policies and protocols.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Must be flexible; May be required to change work schedule.
  • Must be committed to quality of product and customer service.
  • Ability to work autonomously, as well as with a team, to achieve established goals.

Completion of a successful background check is required for employment.

Part Time - $13.50/hour

The Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is looking for a Birthday Party Associate to assist the Event Coordinator in providing fun and safe activities during birthday parties for children. This is a Part-time, non-exempt position; Employment pending criminal background check. This employee promotes the Zoo and its mission.

Essential Job Functions:

Provide safe and manageable parties for children.

  • May be assigned to parties in the Party Place, Alcove or Gazebo.
  • Prepares party space for children and families.
  • Assists children in completing hands on activities.
  • Cleans party area following each party; prepares party area for next party.
  • Adheres to zoo policies and protocols
  • Orders and maintains inventory of party supplies

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Attends departmental meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Desired Training and Experience:

  • Previous experience working with children in a group setting.
  • Works well with supervisor and other staff.
  • Communicates regularly with Event Coordinator.

Skills / Knowledge Required:

  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be organized.
  • Must communicate well with children and adults.
  • Must be available Saturdays and Sundays.

Friends of the Zoo is seeking part-time staff for our retail gift shop, The Curious Cub. Weekday availability Monday to Friday along with weekends is a must. We are looking for candidates who are energetic, customer- and team-oriented. At least one year of retail experience is required.

Part Time - $15/hour

Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is seeking an experienced youth coordinator to manage and mentor a group of teen ZooGuides. ZooGuides are paid Syracuse City School District student interns aged 16 and up who will be trained to interpret biofacts and serve in an educational capacity at the zoo during the spring and summer of 2021. ZooGuide Coordinators will be responsible for managing a group of 20 youth in their growth and service at the zoo.

ZooGuides Coordinator responsibilities include:
- coach interns as they develop their skills
- serve as a mentor to ZooGuides
- evaluate ZooGuides’ performance
- schedule ZooGuides’ shifts
- serve as a liaison between ZooGuides and zoo staff
- work as a partner with other ZooGuide Coordinators

The successful candidate will have at least 2 years’ experience working with teenage youth in a mentoring, coaching, or teaching capacity, a passion for youth development and an optimistic outlook. An associate’s degree in education, human services or a related discipline is desired.

  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Interest in conservation and educating the public about endangered species
  • Multi-lingual

Excellent public speaking and organizational skills and ability to be self-directed, flexible, work as a team player and maintain accurate records.

ZooGuide Coordinators can expect to work 4.5 hours/week during the school year (at least one weekend day per week) and 25 hours/week during the summer (5 days to include weekend work). Scheduling for this position will work especially well for teachers or school support staff.
