World Rhino Day
Join us at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo on Sunday, September 21, to celebrate World Rhino Day! We may not have rhinos at our zoo, but as an AZA-Accredited facility we are committed to the conservation and education of all species – especially those facing extinction.
Also classified as pachyderms because of their thick skin, Sumatran rhinos are critically endangered, just like the Sumatran elephant, a subspecies of Asian elephant. Both species are at risk of extinction because of habitat loss and fragmentation.
There will be a Rhino Chat following our weekend Elephant Creature Chats at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Stop by the lower elephant overlook between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for rhino face mask decorating, information, and auction to win rhino art donated by our friends at the Seneca Park Zoo, painted by their Southern white rhino, Jiwe!
Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the International Rhino Foundation. The International Rhino Foundation, or IRF, is a nonprofit dedicated to rhino conservation through enhancing the impact of conservation programs in rhino range states. Protecting rhinos helps protect entire ecosystems and the other animal and plant life in the area.
